More interview than documentary, the pianist explains his method in a masterclass that unravels into a relaxed conversation. Free of archaeology or biographies: this is just Fernández, revealing himself through his pieces and the musicians that accompany him. More extended interview than a meat-and-potatoes documentary, the pianist explains his method in a master class that unwinds into a relaxed conversation. The film dispenses with archaeologies and biographies to derive its sustenance from Fernández’ reflections on the universe and the musicians with whom he works. Agustí Fernández talks about others a lot (The Barry Guy New Orchestra, the Trio Local, Matts Gustafsson, Evan Parker...) as if reclaiming his role as apprentice in the midst of an educative process, or seeking to divert the focus of the attention. But finally and inevitably, while speaking of others, he reveals himself. Through his words – and of course, his pieces – we are invited to an examination of the physical repercussions of sound, of the search for a spiritual experience capable of stopping time, as well as a demonstration of his hallmark extended piano technique (attacking the chords directly, ignoring the keys.) When we get up from the table, we will have not only enriched our vision thanks to this exemplary sonic explorer, but we will also have seen how to make a truly different kind of documentary.
