Description:
The Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar is a gothic building, the construction of which started in 1329. Paid for by the poor of the city, the builders who participated most actively were the "bastaixos", neighbours of Ribera area of Barcelona, devoted to Santa María. They carried the large stones used in the construction of the church on their back from Montjuïc hill (you can see their sculptures are set into the wall, and appear in our gallery above). Nowadays the Basilica is a temple of light, an unmissable tourist attraction and a memorable place for a classical music concert.Location: Plaça de Santa María, 1, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona 08003

The magnificent framework of the Santa Maria del Mar basilica will once more receive the opening concert of the festival. The Gothic stones will collect the resonances of the monumental organ played by the Spanish organist Andrés Cea Galan. Trained in the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and one of the best exponents of the new generation of Spanish organists, Cea will build a dialogue between the Central European and Spanish schools. A conversation between the keyboard greats of the 17th century.
